Physicians

Thank you for referring to us

All referrals are triaged by a Neurologist.

Adult EEG referrals (age > 16 years) are accepted from all Medical Doctors.

Paediatric EEG referrals (age <16 years) are accepted only from Paediatric Specialists.

You will be notified if the referral is not accepted.

Epilepsy is a clinical diagnosis, and an EEG may not be an appropriate test if there is a clear clinical history or diagnosis of another disorder (e.g. syncope). Home video of events of concern may be more helpful alongside the clinical history. The type of EEG ordered should be determined by the clinical question, if there is uncertainty, a specialist or neurologist opinion is advised.

Medicare Requirements

Please see updated Medicare Benefits Schedule list HERE: 1100011004 / 11005

In-Clinic: 11000

Referrers should note that referrals for routine outpatient EEG need to meet eligibility requirements to allow billing to Medicare. A list of low value indications has been identified by Medicare, where EEG should not be performed except after discussion with a Neurologist.

In some of these situations a routine EEG is of relatively low diagnostic value, while in others it would be more appropriate to refer the patient directly for a prolonged EEG, or to a Neurologist for consultation and possible further investigation:

  • Suspected Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES)
  • Syncope
  • Exclusion of a mass lesion
  • Headache & migraine
  • Behavioural disturbance/aggression
  • Tics
  • Postural dizziness
  • Non-specific fatigue
  • Intellectual impairment
  • Paediatric simple febrile seizures
  • Breath-holding spells
  • Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

In-Home: 11004 & 11005

Items 11004 and 11005 cover prolonged ambulatory or video EEG, recording of at least 3 hours duration for:

  • Diagnosing the basis of episodic neurological dysfunction;
  • Characterising the nature of a patient’s epileptic seizures;
  • Localising seizures in patients with uncontrolled epilepsy, with a view to surgery; or
  • Assessing treatment response where subclinical seizures are suspected.
